Education

SDS Schools Project

This project supports children from minority ethnic backgrounds to achieve success and prevent them from falling behind by being a welcoming, supportive learning community which recognises their specific needs, especially around language and communication skills.

We offer 1 to 1 and small group tutoring with a strong focus on addressing language barriers. Ours is a holistic approach including physical and creative activities and trips to connect with the wider community. We look to develop wider skills in children and young people such as entrepreneurship and community involvement and in all our programs we encourage parental involvement.

Our tutors speak a wide range of languages and can support children not only to improve their English but also their wider communication skills helping them to study across the educational curriculum and gain broader social skills.

Education and Careers Support

Our programs and projects have thousands of new and established members of our community find employment, achieve qualifications and become assets to society. We provide services to youth and adults, including language courses, educational integration, social inclusion through a careers pathway, and tackle poverty in the community through careers training and employment support.

Employment and Training

These services train local people, particularly in disadvantaged communities, to attain employment skills. We give support, advice, and guidance, with the target of achieving long-term employment, for women, young people who are NEET (from 16), those with difficulties in accessing mainstream services and lone parents with low or no skills. We offer help with finding suitable courses, getting qualifications, job searching and applications, career changes and other aspects of learning, training, and work. The services are client-centred and confidential. The workshops will help with interview skills, making a good impression, confidence, communication, interpersonal skills, and meeting employer’s expectations, as well as assist you with application forms, CV’s, cover letters and personal statements.

Adult Learning Services

Our adult learning service is designed to respond to the specific learning needs of the Somali community and other disadvantaged local people. We provide ESOL and ICT courses to improve English language and computer skills, which can contribute to progression in further learning and employment opportunities. Learners come from a variety of backgrounds, but most are Somali or Arabic Women. The service provides the learners with an opportunity to develop and enables them to discover for themselves what they are able to achieve. This helps to improve their motivation, self-esteem, and confidence. The centre also provides free childcare for those in need.
